New Mexico is high-desert country with mountains folded through it, and the combination is unusual. The Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests carry alpine forest roads above 8,000 feet, while the Chihuahuan Desert in the south delivers heat, sand, and long empty distances. Public land is abundant, traffic is light, and much of the best running is on unmarked routes that reward local knowledge.
Altitude and heat both matter to a build here. Thin air costs power and makes correct gearing important after a tire upgrade, exactly as it does in Colorado, while summer desert heat puts real load on cooling systems. New Mexico shops therefore lean toward cooling capacity, gearing, dust sealing, and the self-sufficiency gear that remote travel demands: extra water, recovery equipment, and honest fuel range. Overlanding is a large part of the local scene, helped by long-distance backcountry routes crossing the state. Toyota and Jeep platforms lead, with full-size trucks well represented.
