Locker, Limited Slip, or Neither: Matching Traction to How You Drive
A locker forces both wheels on an axle to turn together for maximum traction off-road. A limited slip biases torque toward the wheel with grip while staying predictable on pavement. An open differential is enough for most drivers. Match the choice to where the vehicle actually spends its week. Traction work is usually done alongside a regear.
Traction devices are one of the easiest places to overspend on a build. Lockers front and rear, the labor to fit them, and the regear that usually rides along add up to real money — often spent for terrain the owner sees twice a year. The part that performs best on a rock ledge can make a daily driver worse.
What a differential is doing when you lose traction
A differential exists so the two wheels on an axle can turn at different speeds. Going around a corner, the outside wheel travels farther than the inside one. Without a differential, something has to slip — a tire, or a part you would rather keep.
The standard open differential does that by sending torque along the path of least resistance. On pavement that is invisible and correct. Off-road it is the whole problem: lift one wheel off the ground, or put it on ice or wet clay, and that wheel takes the power while the one with grip does nothing. The axle is delivering torque to the wheel that cannot use it.
Everything in this category is an answer to that one failure.

Read that as a spectrum from "does nothing until something is wrong" to "does everything, all the time, whether you want it or not."
An open differential is not automatically the wrong answer
Forums will not say this, so it is worth saying: plenty of builds do not need a traction device at all. A modern traction-control system, tires with real bite, and a driver who picks lines carefully get through more than people expect. Brake-based traction control is crude, but on the terrain most owners drive it does a fair share of what a limited slip does, already installed and paid for.
If the honest answer to "when did a spinning wheel last stop me" is "I cannot remember," the money belongs in tires or the regear you actually need. Traction hardware is easy to add later. It is one of the few build decisions that does not get harder by waiting.
What a limited slip buys, and what it does not
A limited slip resists a speed difference between the two wheels, so it keeps sending torque to the wheel with grip instead of handing all of it to the one spinning. Clutch-type and gear-driven designs get there by different means. The result is similar: better traction in rain, snow, sand, and loose dirt, with close to factory manners and nothing to remember to switch on.
The limit is structural, not a matter of quality. A limited slip biases torque. It does not lock. Lift a wheel clear of the ground, or put one on a genuinely slick surface, and it eventually gives up. That is exactly the situation hard trails create.
So a limited slip is the right call for someone whose worst day is a wet boat ramp, a snowy driveway, or a rutted forest road. It is the wrong call for someone whose worst day has three wheels on the ground.
Automatic or selectable, and what each costs you the rest of the week
An automatic locker is mechanical and always in the loop. Under power it locks the axle. Coasting or turning, it ratchets and lets the outside wheel run ahead. It is simple, has no wiring or air lines, and works whether you remembered it or not.
The cost is manners. Expect clunks on and off the throttle, a rig that wants to run wide when you accelerate through a turn, and behavior on wet pavement that asks for a lighter right foot. On a solid front axle it changes steering feel under power as well. Plenty of people live with all of it happily. Some regret it inside a month of commuting.
A selectable locker removes that compromise and adds complexity in its place. Off, the axle is open and the vehicle drives the way it left the factory. On, both wheels turn together. You pay for it with an air compressor or an electric actuator, a line or harness routed through a moving, wet, dirty part of the vehicle, and a switch you can forget mid-obstacle. More to install and more to go wrong — and the honest answer for the large group of people who drive to the trailhead on Saturday morning.
Front, rear, or both?
If you are adding one, add it to the rear. The rear axle carries weight under acceleration, most of the benefit shows up there, and locking it changes on-road behavior less than locking the front.
A front locker is the second step, not the first, and it should be something you can disengage. A locked front axle resists turning — that is what it does — which means a rig that pushes straight when you need it to steer. On a tight, off-camber climb that is a problem, not a feature. Front lockers earn their place on vehicles that see obstacles requiring both axles to pull.
The install depth is why this rides along with a regear
Fitting a locker or a limited slip means opening the differential, pulling the carrier, and setting the gears up again. Backlash and pinion depth get measured, the pattern gets checked, and a bad setup announces itself as whine now or failed gears later.
That is the same teardown as a regear, which is why locker installation is rarely a standalone visit. If you are already going in for a gear change after a tire-size increase, that is when the traction device goes in. Doing them separately means paying for the same labor twice. So if a regear is anywhere on your plan, settle the traction question before that appointment.
What locking an axle does to everything behind it
Traction is stress. An open differential lets a wheel spin instead of loading the drivetrain. Take that escape away and the torque has to go somewhere: into the axle shafts, the U-joints, the driveshaft, and the ring and pinion. Add oversized tires for leverage and every one of those loads climbs again.
That is not an argument against lockers, but for looking hard at what one feeds. Stock axle shafts behind a locked axle on big tires are a known failure point, and they tend to find it a long way from pavement.
The audit that decides it
Answer these about the last 12 months rather than the next 12:
- What share of your miles were pavement?
- How many times did a spinning wheel actually stop you?
- Do you wheel alone, where stuck is a recovery problem instead of an inconvenience?
- Do you drive it through winter?
- Is a regear already coming?
Someone at 90 percent pavement and 10 percent graded dirt has an answer, usually a limited slip or nothing at all. The people who overspend are the ones buying for the trip they are planning instead of the year they just had.
What to ask a shop
- What would you fit for how I actually drive — and would that change if my budget were smaller?
- Are we opening this axle for a regear anyway, and what does the traction device add on top of that?
- What axle shafts am I on, and do they become the weak link once this is locked?
- Where does the compressor or actuator mount, and how is the line protected?
- Do you set up and check the gear pattern in-house?
A shop that opens with how you drive, rather than with what it stocks, is worth the extra distance.
