Lift Kits Explained: Suspension, Body, and Leveling

A lift kit raises a vehicle to fit larger tires and improve off-road clearance. The three common types are suspension lifts, which lift the whole chassis; body lifts, which raise the body off the frame; and leveling kits, which even out factory rake. The right choice depends on tire size, terrain, and budget.

"Lift kit" is one term for several different things, and the differences matter once you start spending money. Pick the wrong type and you either pay for capability you'll never use or fall short of the clearance you actually need. Here's how the main options compare and how to choose between them.

What does a lift kit actually do?

A lift kit raises the vehicle to make room for larger tires and to keep components off the rocks. Bigger tires are usually the real goal — the lift exists to fit them without rubbing. More height also improves approach, departure, and breakover angles, which is what lets a rig clear obstacles instead of dragging across them.

What a lift does not do, on its own, is make a vehicle handle better. Raising the center of gravity changes how a rig drives, so a good lift is engineered as a system — springs, shocks, and geometry corrections together — not just a spacer that pushes the body up.

What are the types of lift kit?

The three you'll hear about most are suspension lifts, body lifts, and leveling kits. They solve different problems at different price points.

A leveling kit is the smallest step: it raises the front to sit level with the rear, which fits a modestly larger tire and squares up the stance. A body lift raises the body off the frame on taller pucks, gaining tire clearance without touching the suspension — cheaper, but it doesn't add ground clearance under the axles. A suspension lift raises the entire chassis and is the only one of the three that genuinely improves off-road clearance and travel.

How much lift do I actually need?

Start from the tire, not the number. Decide the tire size the build needs, then choose the smallest lift that clears it.

  • A 2-inch lift plus a leveling kit clears mild all-terrain upgrades on most platforms.
  • A 2.5- to 3.5-inch suspension lift covers the majority of trail builds on 35-inch tires.
  • Past about 4 inches, you're into supporting modifications — and that's where costs climb.

The reason to stay conservative is that lift cascades. Bigger tires and more height change the gearing, the driveline angles, and sometimes the brakes.

Going up in tire size almost always means a regear so the engine keeps usable power — budget for it from the start.

Should I install a lift myself or use a shop?

A leveling kit is within reach for a competent home mechanic. A full suspension lift is a different job: it touches steering geometry, brake lines, driveline angles, and alignment, and getting any of those wrong shows up as vibration, wandering, or premature wear.

This is where a specialist earns the cost. A shop that installs lifts every week will flag the supporting work — the regear, the longer brake lines, the track-bar correction — before it becomes a problem. Start from lift kit installation in the directory and match the shop to the platform you drive.

Buy the tire you want, then the smallest lift that clears it, then the supporting work that keeps it reliable. A leveling kit squares the stance, a body lift buys clearance cheaply, and a suspension lift is the one that adds real capability.
